The 3 Card Poker Background
Three card poker is a little complicated because it is actually two poker games rolled into one: "Pair Plus" and "Ante & Play". Each game has its own rules, its own strategies and its own payout table. The player needs to know and understand the rules of each game.
In this game you are dealt 3 cards and you are competing against the dealer. You need a better hand than the dealer, and at least a pair in order to win. Since there are fewer ways to make a straight with three cards than a flush, straights rank higher. Aces can be high or low.
The Three Card Poker Rules
There is an option of playing only Pair Plus or only Ante & Play, but it is a good idea to play both 3 card poker games together. This allows you to hedge your bets and keep your losses to a minimum.
Practice 3 Card Poker Games
If you are playing three card poker online, play a few practice games before you start gambling for real money. This gives you a chance to become familiar with the game before you risk any real money. Most online casinos allow free practice games, so be smart and take advantage of the opportunity.
Check out different online casinos and look at different online 3 card poker games. Pay careful attention to the payout tables. Some online casinos pay 5 to 1 for a straight in the Pair Plus 3 card poker game. That is not so good. The best online casinos, including Wild Jack Casino, pay 6 to 1. Don't settle for less. And don't settle for less than a 4 to 1 payout for your flush, either.
Use the Basic Three Card Poker Strategy
If you are playing Ante & Play, learn the basic Ante & Play poker strategy. You do not have to follow the strategy blindly. If you have a hunch that you can beat the dealer, follow your hunch. But bear in mind that the basic strategy should be your foundation and also the basis for playing most of your 3 card poker hands.
3 Card Poker Tips
If you have a Queen or better, bet the Pair Plus.
If you don't have at least a Queen or better, fold. The dealer will get a Queen about 66% of the time.
The best rule of thumb to go by, is the queen-6-4 rule. If you have at least a high singleton (Q-6-4) your best plan is to raise.
If you only have less than a high singleton, then the best plan is to fold.
Watch Your Bankroll in 3 Card Poker
This rule applies to all gambling games including three card poker:
Be mindful of your bankroll.
Don't bet more than you can afford to lose.
Don't chase after your losses.
Don't be shy about standing up and walking away from the poker table, or the online poker terminal, when you have reached your bankroll limit.
